WhatsApp Verification Code Not Arriving: Step-by-Step Checks
WhatsApp sends a 6-digit code by SMS or by phone call, and either one can fail for reasons you can check in a few minutes. A wrong number, weak signal, message filter or a run of repeated requests are the usual suspects. Work through the checks below before you change numbers.
Wait for the countdown, then request the code once more
WhatsApp shows a countdown after you enter your number, and the resend or call option appears only when that timer ends. Requesting again before then does nothing useful. Let the timer run out, then tap Resend SMS once. The text can take longer on a congested network, so give it a few minutes before you decide it failed.
Check the number and country format
WhatsApp sends the code to exactly the number on the confirmation screen, so a typo or wrong country code ends in silence. Pick the country first, then type the national number without the leading zero. Read the number back on the confirmation prompt. For a number from another country, include the matching country code and confirm that the phone can receive international texts.
Test the phone, SIM and message filters
SMS delivery depends on signal, free storage, the active SIM and any spam filter, so test these before blaming WhatsApp. Switch airplane mode on and off, restart the phone, and check that the right SIM is active on a dual-SIM device. Look in the spam, blocked and filtered folders of your messaging app.
Carrier restrictions, prepaid plans with limited texts, and roaming can block automated messages. If codes from other apps also fail, the problem sits on the phone or carrier side.
Switch to the call option for a spoken code
WhatsApp lets you request a phone call that reads the 6 digits aloud once the call option becomes available. Answer the call and write the digits down. The same option works for a landline, which helps when filtering blocks texts. Our site receives SMS only, so a line from this site cannot take that call.
Too many attempts and the waiting period
After several failed or repeated code requests, WhatsApp pauses new codes and tells you to wait before trying again. The message shows how long to wait, and the delay can grow with repeated tries.
Close the app, wait out the period, and make one clean attempt. Update WhatsApp to the current store version first, because an outdated app can fail to request the code.
Codes you did not ask for
A WhatsApp code that arrives without your request usually means someone typed your number into the app, often by mistake. Ignore the message and never read the digits to another person, whoever claims to need them.
Scammers pose as friends and ask for the code to take over accounts. If codes keep coming, switch on two-step verification in WhatsApp so a stolen code alone cannot open the account.
When a different number or support is the next step
A different number helps when your own line cannot receive texts, or when the account is a test you do not plan to keep. Open the WhatsApp numbers page, pick a line, and request the code in the app. The code appears in the live inbox, which refreshes about every 20 seconds. If the account matters long term, choose a private number.
When every route fails, use the help option on the verification screen to reach WhatsApp support. If you do not want to register with a number at all, see WhatsApp without a phone number.
