WhatsApp Number Already Registered: What to Do

A WhatsApp number already registered has an account on it, which belongs to you, to a previous owner of a recycled number or to someone who used your code. The SIM holder decides. Whoever receives the registration code on that SIM card takes the account, and the phone that held it before is signed out.

Why does WhatsApp say my number is already registered?

WhatsApp says a number is already registered when an account still exists on it, because WhatsApp keeps exactly one account per number. Three histories are common. Your own old phone, a stranger who owned the number before the carrier recycled it, or a takeover with a forwarded code can leave that account behind.

Carriers put numbers back into circulation months after their owners leave, and many previous owners never delete WhatsApp first. The already registered account then waits for whoever gets the SIM next.

What does WhatsApp do with a previous owner's account after 45 days?

WhatsApp treats an account that stayed inactive for 45 days and then appears on a new device as a recycled number. Old data stays hidden. The previous owner's profile photo, About text and messages are not passed to the new person, so a recycled WhatsApp number opens as a fresh account.

For example, a number whose WhatsApp was last used in July 2026 and that a carrier reissues in September 2026 opens empty. Group invitations meant for the previous owner can be ignored or reported.

Why do strangers message me after I get a recycled number?

Strangers message a recycled number because their phone books still link it to the previous owner, and WhatsApp shows your chats under the old contact name. Old groups may also ping you. Leave such groups, tell close contacts of the previous owner once and block the rest without opening links.

Delivery services, banks and doctors sometimes still send reminders meant for the previous owner of the number. Ask them to update their records, and never reply with personal details.

What if WhatsApp asks for a PIN you never set?

A WhatsApp PIN you never set means the previous owner or an intruder turned on two-step verification for the number. Tap Forgot PIN. Without access to their email you wait for the reset, which WhatsApp's help pages give as 7 days.

The forgot WhatsApp PIN guide explains the reset and what happens to the old account after 30 days. Keep the SIM in the phone during the wait.

How do you check WhatsApp linked devices for an intruder?

To check WhatsApp linked devices after a takeover of your registered number, open Settings, Linked devices and log out unknown computers or tablets. Each entry shows its last activity. An attacker who once scanned your QR code can keep reading new messages there until you end that session.

Repeat the check a day after any takeover of an already registered WhatsApp number. A browser you never used at an odd hour is the clearest warning.

Why should you never share a WhatsApp code with anyone?

A WhatsApp code shared with anyone hands them your account, and requests for codes are the most common takeover trick. Friends' accounts get hijacked first. The attacker writes from a known contact, claims a code arrived by mistake and asks you to forward it within minutes.

Turn on two-step verification with an email right after you take the number back. Public numbers on our free WhatsApp numbers often carry earlier accounts, and taking one over breaks our Terms of Use.
