Is GB WhatsApp Safe? What Happens to Your Account
GB WhatsApp is unsafe, since it is an unofficial modified copy of WhatsApp that the company bans and that researchers have caught carrying spyware. WhatsApp Plus and FMWhatsApp share the risks. Moving back to the official app keeps your number and usually your account, as long as the ban on it stayed temporary.
What is GB WhatsApp?
GB WhatsApp is a modified version of WhatsApp made by third parties and spread as an APK file outside Google Play. Nobody audits it. Mods like GB WhatsApp promise themes, a hidden online status and other tweaks, and they ask for the same permissions as the official app.
WhatsApp Plus, FMWhatsApp and YoWhatsApp are built the same way as GB WhatsApp. None of them comes from WhatsApp, and none is listed in the official stores.
Why is GB WhatsApp not safe?
GB WhatsApp is not safe because the app reads every message on the phone while nobody checks its code. Spyware has already appeared. In 2023 Kaspersky found the CanesSpy spyware in GBWhatsApp, WhatsApp Plus and other mods spread through Telegram channels and mod sites.
CanesSpy in GB WhatsApp builds sent phone numbers, contacts and device IDs to its servers and could record audio. Kaspersky counted more than 340,000 attacks in October 2023 across over 100 countries.
Can WhatsApp ban you for using GB WhatsApp?
WhatsApp can ban you for using GB WhatsApp, since accounts on unofficial apps get a temporary ban and repeated use can end in a permanent one. The ban screen names the fix. It asks you to move to the official app before the timer ends, or the account can stay blocked for good.
WhatsApp's help center has separate articles on unofficial apps and on temporarily banned accounts, and both describe GB WhatsApp as a breach of the terms. Repeat offenders lose the number for good.

Which WhatsApp mods carried CanesSpy and the FMWhatsApp trojan?
CanesSpy hid in GBWhatsApp and WhatsApp Plus builds in 2023, while the FMWhatsApp trojan, called Triada, appeared in 2021. Both came from Kaspersky reports. Triada showed ads, signed users up for paid subscriptions and could read SMS messages, including WhatsApp registration codes.
Any WhatsApp mod that asks for SMS access hands that access to hidden code inside it. The official app from Google Play or the App Store avoids the problem entirely.
Does official WhatsApp have the features GB WhatsApp offers?
Official WhatsApp now covers most features that pushed people to GB WhatsApp, from a hidden online status to edited messages and locked chats. Two accounts work too. The official app holds 2 accounts on Android since 2023 and on iPhone since March 2026.
Two WhatsApp accounts on one phone explains that feature, which removes the most common reason to install GB WhatsApp. Themes and chat lock are built in as well.
How do you move from GB WhatsApp to the official app?
To move from GB WhatsApp to the official app, back up your chats inside the mod, uninstall it and install WhatsApp from Google Play. Then register your number. WhatsApp's help pages describe this move for GB WhatsApp and WhatsApp Plus users who see the temporary ban screen.
For example, a user banned temporarily on 3 October 2026 can register the same number in the official app and keep the account. Turn on two-step verification afterwards, and keep tests on our free WhatsApp numbers off the main phone.
