Why the Telegram Code Does Not Arrive, and How to Fix It
A Telegram login code has 5 digits and can arrive in three ways: inside Telegram on a device that is already signed in, by SMS, or by phone call. When none of them shows up, the cause is usually a wrong number, a blocked message, or too many requests in a row. The checks below go from the quickest to the slowest.
Look for the code inside Telegram first
Telegram sends the code to your other signed-in devices before it sends an SMS, so open the app on any phone, tablet or desktop where you are logged in. The message appears in a chat called Telegram. If you have no other session, the code goes by SMS instead. After a short wait the login screen offers a resend option, and a phone call may follow.
Check the number and country code
A single wrong digit or a missing country code sends the code to a different phone, so compare the number on screen with the one you meant to use. Enter the number in international format, choose the right country in the picker, and drop any leading zero from the local number. Telegram repeats the number on the code screen. If it is wrong, go back and fix it instead of waiting.
A number that already has a Telegram account sends the code to that account's active sessions. This explains cases where no SMS appears on a number that someone used before.
Rule out signal, filters and SIM problems
An SMS needs a working mobile connection, free message storage and no filter standing in the way, so test these before anything else. Turn airplane mode off, move to a spot with signal, and restart the phone. On iPhone, the Filter Unknown Senders setting in Messages can hide the text in a separate tab. On Android, spam protection or a blocked-sender list can swallow it.
On a dual-SIM phone the message may land on the other SIM. Some carriers also filter automated messages, and a call to your carrier's support can confirm whether yours does.
Wait for the timer and avoid repeated requests
Telegram limits how often it sends codes, so pressing resend again and again can pause new codes for a while. After several failed or repeated attempts the app shows a message asking you to try later. Wait until the timer ends, request one code, and give it time. Restarting the sign-up over and over does not skip the limit.
Use the official Telegram app from your app store or telegram.org, and turn off a VPN that places you in another region. Unofficial clients and some VPN exit points can stop the request from completing.
Get a login code by email or another route
Telegram can send the login code to an email address only when you added a login email in the app before you lost access. Without that, the options are the code inside another session, a call, or a QR code scanned from a signed-in phone on Telegram Desktop or Web. The cloud password is a separate layer: it asks for a password after the code and never replaces the code.
When a different number makes sense
A different number helps when your own line cannot receive SMS from Telegram, or when the account is a throwaway test. Pick a line from the Telegram numbers page, request the code once, and watch the feed, which refreshes about every 20 seconds. The page shows SMS only, so choose SMS and skip the call option. If one line stays silent, try another instead of resending repeatedly.
A public line is a poor choice for logging in to an existing account tied to your own number, since that code goes to your number. For a profile you plan to keep, use a private number.
What to do when nothing works
If every check fails, Telegram support and the account's own recovery tools are the remaining routes. Contact Telegram through its official support page or the help link on the login screen, and give the number in international format. Access normally depends on the code, a signed-in session, or the cloud password, so offers to bypass them are scams.
