Telegram spam: how to stop it and how to lift a spam limit
Telegram spam is unwanted messages, group invites and bots from strangers, and Telegram fights it with user reports that moderators review. Reporting a chat as spam can limit the sender's account. The same system can limit you, which is where @SpamBot comes in.
Why am I suddenly getting spam messages on Telegram?
Telegram spam reaches you through 3 doors the FAQ lists. Someone knows your number, you share a group with them, or you set a public username. A public username shows you in global search, so strangers can write without knowing your number. Joining a large public group has the same effect.
Spam bots behave like any other user. The FAQ notes that bots see your public name, username, photo and the messages you send them, never your phone number unless you share it. A sudden wave of Telegram spam usually follows a new public group, a new username or a number that leaked somewhere.
How do I stop spam on Telegram?
Stop Telegram spam by reporting each spam chat, blocking the sender and closing the doors in Privacy and Security. Report spam sends the messages to Telegram's moderators, who decide whether to limit the account. Blocking stops that sender at once.
Then decide who may reach you on Telegram. Security Alliance and BlancVPN both suggest Who can add me to groups and channels set to My Contacts, so Telegram spam groups cannot pull you in. BlancVPN adds that Telegram Premium users can restrict who may send them messages.
- Report spam from the chat menu, then block the sender.
- Set group invites to My Contacts in Privacy and Security.
- Hide or drop a public username you do not need.
- Stop unwanted bots with Block or Stop Bot in their profile.

What is the Telegram Premium scam?
The Telegram Premium scam is a spam message, often from a hijacked contact, promising a free Premium subscription through a link that steals your login. Kaspersky describes links styled like t.me/premium that redirect to fraudulent sites. Entering your login code there hands the account to the scammer, who then messages your contacts.
Real Premium gifts arrive inside Telegram, with no login page in between. Treat any Premium offer that asks you to sign in, scan a code or share a code as Telegram spam, and report it. If a friend sent it, warn them by another channel, since their account may already be taken.
Why was my Telegram account limited for spam?
A Telegram account gets limited for spam after people press Report spam on its messages and Telegram moderators agree. The Spam FAQ says any unwanted private message counts, even a photo, an invite link or a hello. Adding people to Telegram groups they never asked for is reported the same way.
A Telegram account limited for spam still works for people who know you. It can message anyone who saved its number as a contact and reply to anyone who writes first. The FAQ says a first spam limit usually lasts a few days, while repeated reports lead to longer limits or a permanent one.
For example, 1 hello sent to 20 strangers found through username search can bring 20 spam reports. Each report counts toward a limit.
How do I remove a spam restriction on Telegram?
To remove a spam restriction on Telegram, message @SpamBot, the official Spam Info Bot, and explain your case if you believe the limit was a mistake. The bot shows whether your account is limited. Telegram admits its systems sometimes err, and it reviews those appeals.
If you did send unwanted messages, the FAQ is frank that a limit cannot be lifted early. A frozen account is a stronger measure after many reports: you can read chats but not send anything, and the appeal starts from a button inside the app.

How do group admins fight spam on Telegram?
Telegram group admins fight spam with reports, bots and, since June 2026, AI Guardians that let AI admins screen new members of a group. The Spam FAQ notes that admins can report users who post spam in their groups. Those reports go to the same moderators who limit accounts.
Some admins add a dedicated anti-spam bot. TG-Spam, an open-source project on GitHub, runs as a self-hosted Docker container with a Telegram bot token, deletes spam messages and bans the senders. It learns from human corrections, so new kinds of Telegram spam get caught over time.
Can a new number trigger a Telegram spam limit?
Yes, the Spam FAQ says some numbers trigger an overly harsh response, due to a previous owner's activity or to being certain virtual or VoIP numbers. A fresh account on such a number can be limited before it sends anything. Telegram asks those users to tell @SpamBot their story.
Shared lines make this matter. Our free Telegram numbers suit a test account that never messages strangers, and a heavily used line can carry that history. For an account that will contact people, a private number (coming soon) with a clean record is the safer start, and our account security guide covers the rest.
Mistakes that get Telegram accounts reported for spam
Most Telegram spam limits hit people who did not see their own messages as spam. The Telegram Spam FAQ says the receiver decides, and its username search is not meant for meeting new people.
- Messaging people you found through Telegram username search.
- Adding strangers to Telegram groups or channels without asking.
- Sending t.me links or invite links to people who never asked for them.
- Messaging strangers again right after a @SpamBot limit ends.
