ChatGPT Is Not Sending the SMS Code: How to Get It
ChatGPT sends a 6-digit code to your phone during sign-up, and when it fails to show, the number, the carrier or the resend limit is the usual cause. OpenAI also emails separate temporary codes at login, which are easy to confuse with the text. Codes on our public lines stay visible for 10 minutes, long enough to catch a late message.
Confirm which code ChatGPT is waiting for
ChatGPT can ask for a code from your email or from your phone, and the two arrive through different channels.
A message titled like a temporary ChatGPT verification code comes by email from OpenAI when you log in. The phone step during sign-up uses a text message instead. If the screen mentions your email, look in the inbox and the spam folder, not in the messages app.
Check the number and the phone
A wrong digit, a missing country code or a landline number accounts for many cases where the ChatGPT text never shows.
Re-enter the number with the country selector set correctly. Check the signal and airplane mode, then open any spam or unknown senders folder in the messages app. A dual-SIM phone must have the SIM with that number set to receive texts.
Request once, then wait before resending
ChatGPT can show a message about too many attempts when you press resend repeatedly, and new codes may stop for a while.
Request the code one time, then give the text room to arrive. Use the resend option a single time after a pause. If the page asks you to try later, close it and return after a break, because every extra request can extend the wait.
Look at carrier and region factors
Carriers can filter texts from automated senders, and a VPN can place your session in a different country than your number.
Switch the VPN off for the phone step and compare your location with the number's country. Ask the carrier whether it blocks short-code or international sender texts, since prepaid plans sometimes restrict them. ChatGPT is also not offered in every country, so check that yours is supported.
A number that is already used or not accepted
OpenAI limits how many accounts a single phone number can verify, so a number used before may be refused or may receive nothing.
A number that has verified earlier ChatGPT accounts reaches that limit first. A landline cannot receive the text at all, and some virtual ranges are rejected outright. If the same error repeats on a mobile number you own, try a different number or ask OpenAI support.
Using a public line when the code does not show
On our site, a missing ChatGPT code usually means the line was already used, the text was delayed or another visitor copied the code first.
Open the ChatGPT platform page, choose a line that recently received OpenAI codes and request a new code. The number page refreshes about every 20 seconds, and the inbox is shared. Voice codes cannot be received. For an account you want to keep, use a private number or your own SIM.
The full list of lines is on the ChatGPT temporary number page.
When to contact OpenAI support
If none of the checks work, the OpenAI Help Center and its chat support are the right place to ask about a blocked verification.
Describe the exact message on screen, the country of the number and the device you use. Never share a code with anyone who contacts you first. Where the phone step is the only obstacle, read about the account options without a phone number.
Fix a missing ChatGPT code in order
- Match the code typeDecide whether the screen wants a text code or the emailed temporary code, and open the right inbox.
- Re-enter the numberRetype the digits with the correct country, then check signal, filters and the active SIM.
- Request oncePress send one time and wait before using resend, to avoid the too-many-attempts pause.
- Change the lineFor a test account, try another number from the ChatGPT platform page.
