How to change the phone number on your Amazon account

Changing the phone number on an Amazon account swaps the old phone for a new one after you approve the request on the old phone or by email. The new SIM then confirms itself with a texted code. If the old SIM is gone, the email or the recovery route covers that step.

What happens when you change your number in Login and Security?

When you change your number, the old phone hands over to the new one in a single swap, after a confirmation that reaches the old phone and the registered email. The store sends either a passcode or an approval link for that step. Approving it opens the field for the new digits.

A text then reaches the new SIM with a code, and entering it finishes the swap. The help page for this flow says you can change or update the number as many times as you wish. There is no stated limit. Each swap still needs a working phone on the receiving end.

How do you approve the change from the old phone or email?

You approve the change by tapping the link in the text sent to the old phone, or the same link in the email, and choosing Approve. Either one is enough, which helps when the old SIM is already in a drawer. Return to the app after approving, and the editable rows appear.

Some regions handle the phone number change with a one-time passcode in place of the link, sent by Amazon to both the old phone and the email. Type that passcode on the screen and continue. If the first text sat unread for a while, request a fresh one.

What if the old SIM stopped working?

If the old SIM is gone, approve the Login and Security change from the registered email, then type the new number. The snag comes when two-step verification still sends codes to that dead SIM. Amazon's sign-in screen handles that case through Didn't Receive the Code and Two-Step Verification Account Recovery.

Amazon staff on the seller forums said that recovery check typically takes 1 to 2 days, with an email when it is done. Then sign in, finish the phone number change and move the second step to the new phone. The two-step verification guide covers that menu.

For example, an Amazon member whose old SIM still works approves the phone number change on that phone at once. A dead SIM with two-step verification adds the 1 to 2 days of recovery that staff described.

Do shipping addresses keep the old phone number?

Yes, shipping addresses keep the old phone number until you edit them, because each saved address has its own phone field. Changing the mobile row does not rewrite them. Open Your Account, then Your Addresses, and tap Edit under each address that still shows the old digits.

Clear the phone field, type the new number and press Save changes at the bottom of the form. Repeat it for gift addresses and work addresses you saved over the years. Each one is separate.

An account with 4 saved shipping addresses therefore needs 4 separate edits after the swap. Gift addresses count as well.

Why won't the new number verify?

When the new phone number will not verify, the swap is still unfinished, and the old SIM still matters until it completes. Keep the old phone switched on for that stretch. The Amazon code not received checklist covers why a text can stall on the carrier side.

Porting is the one case where you do not need to change the phone number at all. If you moved the same number to a new carrier, Amazon keeps working with it, and only the handset differs. A brand new number, by contrast, has to go through the whole change.

What goes wrong when you change your Amazon number?

A costly mistake is waiting to change your Amazon number until the old SIM is cancelled, because the approval link then has nowhere to go. Keep the email on file working too, since it is the backup for the approval step. Then update every saved address on the same day.

Moving a profile you keep onto one of our free Amazon numbers is a mistake, because anyone can read that inbox. Move it to your own phone or a private number (coming soon) instead. Profiles that never had a number start from the add a phone number guide.
