How to Use Instagram Without Giving a Phone Number
Instagram lets you sign up with an email address, so a phone number is optional at creation, and a 6-digit code sent to that email confirms the account. Phone prompts can still appear later as security checks. The sections below cover sign-up, login, recovery and the few cases where a temporary number helps.
Sign up for Instagram with only an email address
Instagram accepts an email address instead of a phone number on its sign-up form, so you can create an account without a phone. Type the address in the field labeled mobile number or email, then add a password, birthday and username. The app sends a 6-digit confirmation code to that mailbox, and entering it finishes the step.
That answers the common question about an account with just an email: it works, and the form does not push you to add a phone. Use an address you will keep for years, because it becomes your main recovery contact.
Why Instagram may still ask for a phone later
Instagram can request a phone number later as a security check, for example after unusual activity or a login from a new device. You cannot choose when that happens, and it is not part of the normal sign-up.
Accounts created over a VPN, on a shared network or with many quick actions are more likely to meet extra checks. When a prompt appears, the same screen sometimes offers a different confirmation method, such as email, so read the options before adding a number.

An Instagram profile can be pseudonymous, but it cannot be fully anonymous because Instagram still holds your email, device details and activity. You choose the username and display name, so neither has to match your legal name.

Log in or recover access without the phone number
You log in with your username or email and password, so the phone number is not needed for normal access. If you forgot the password, enter your username or email on the 'Forgot password' screen and pick a contact that still works.
A device where you are already logged in can change the password from the settings. Accounts linked to Facebook can often log in through it, but that link exists only if you set it up earlier. If both email and phone are gone, 'Get help logging in' may ask you to confirm your identity with a video selfie.
Change or remove a phone number on an existing account
You change or remove a phone number in Accounts Center, in the contact information part of your personal details. You must be logged in, and Instagram may ask you to confirm the change with a code sent to the new number or your email.
If you cannot log in and no longer hold the old number, recover access through your email first, because no route skips verification. Add a recovery email you control before you delete the number.
Two-factor login without SMS
An authentication app protects your Instagram login without SMS, and Instagram lists it among its two-factor methods. Turn it on in the security settings and save the backup codes the app shows you.
