How to Use X (Twitter) Without Giving a Phone Number
You can open an X (Twitter) account with an email address, because the sign-up form offers email as an alternative to a phone number. This page covers the official routes, what X may still ask for later and where a public number fits. A code on our lines stays readable for 10 minutes if X does insist on a phone check.
Sign up with an email address instead of a phone number
The X sign-up form lets you switch from phone to email, so a working email address can stand in for the number.
Enter your name and email, then confirm the code X sends to that inbox. After that you choose a password and a handle. The phone field can stay empty, and you can add a number later in the account settings if you ever want one.
Sign up with a Google or Apple account
X offers sign-up through a Google or Apple account on its start screen, which reuses an identity you already have.
That route saves you from inventing a password, yet it ties the X account to that Google or Apple login. If you lose access to it, recovery gets harder. X can still ask for extra checks on a brand-new account.
When X asks for a phone number anyway
X can ask for a phone number after sign-up if the account looks automated or if it is locked for suspicious activity.
Restoring access to such an account often needs a code sent to a phone, and email alone may not be enough. For a throwaway test profile, a line from the X temporary number page can supply that code. For a profile you intend to keep, use your own number or a private number.
Staying anonymous on X
An X account can be anonymous toward other users, because the handle and display name do not have to match your real name.
X itself still holds the email or phone you registered with. Follow the platform rules on parody, automation and multiple accounts. If you add a phone number, turn off the setting that lets people find you by that number.
Reading X as a guest
Logged-out visitors can open public posts and profile pages through direct links, though X limits how much they can scroll and see.
Guests cannot post, like, follow or send messages. What a logged-out visitor sees has changed several times, so the result depends on the day and the page. Search results and timelines often ask you to log in.
Recovering an X account without the phone number
You can recover an X account without its phone number if you still control the email address or authentication app attached to it.
Use the password reset on the login screen and follow the link or code sent to the email. A saved backup code also works for two-factor login. If neither the email nor the phone is reachable, the X account access form is the remaining route, and X decides each case. A public number is no help in recovery, because it is not tied to your account.
If a code goes missing during recovery, read what to check when the X code is missing.
