Using Discord Without Linking a Phone Number
A Discord account needs only an email address, a username and a birth date, so a phone number is optional for basic use. Phone checks come from server rules or Discord's own anti-spam system, and then a 6-digit SMS code is required. For a one-off case, a free temporary number can receive it.
What a basic Discord account needs
A basic Discord account needs an email, a username, a password and a birth date. Nothing in the standard register form asks for a phone.
You can join servers, read channels and chat in servers that do not require phone verification. Confirm your email address after sign-up, since several features depend on it.
Why Discord asks for a phone anyway
Discord asks for a phone number because a server owner set a verification level or because Discord suspects spam. That is the answer to why Discord seems to force a number on you.
Owners choose a stricter level to keep spam bots out of their server. Discord's own checks run when it sees unusual joins or logins from a new place.
Joining servers that require a verified phone
If a server requires a phone, you can message the moderators or find a similar server without the rule. Some servers have a rules channel with a manual approval step.
Do not rely on tricks that promise to fake a verified phone. Discord rejects numbers from internet-calling services, and fake-number tools often collect your login data.
Guest access and age limits
Discord does not let you chat as an anonymous guest, so you need an account. Invite links may show a preview, but joining requires login.
The minimum age is 13 in most countries, and some regions set it higher. Servers marked adult only need age confirmation, which is separate from a phone check.
Where a temporary number fits
A public line works for a test account, a bot-testing profile or a server you will leave soon. Open the Discord page, choose a line, request the code and read it from the shared inbox.
The feed refreshes about every 20 seconds, and an error means you should try another line. The Discord code-not-received page lists what to check.
Two-factor authentication without SMS
An authenticator app protects a Discord account without any phone number. Turn it on in My Account, and store the backup codes somewhere safe.
For an account you keep, a private number is the cleaner way to hold a verified phone, because only you receive its messages.
Removing a phone from Discord later
You can remove a linked number from My Account in User Settings. Some servers may ask for it again afterward.
If SMS backup for two-factor is on, switch it to an authenticator app first. This also frees the number for use elsewhere.
