Is Discord secure enough for chats, servers and personal data?

Discord is a secure app for everyday chat, with every message encrypted in transit. Discord itself is not private by design. Voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, while text chats are encrypted only between your device and Discord's servers, so Discord itself can read them.

Is Discord secure?

Discord is secure enough for everyday chat, and its policy at discord.com/privacy says a Trust and Safety team watches for abuse. The weak points sit elsewhere. Readable text, metadata and strangers carry the risk.

Discord is less secure around people than around code. Large public servers attract trolls, scammers and bots, while a small private server of people you know carries far less of that risk. The Discord DM safety guide covers messages from strangers.

Is Discord encrypted?

Discord is encrypted, though the level depends on what you send. Voice and video calls use end-to-end encryption through Discord's open-source DAVE protocol, so only the people on the call can hear them. Text messages, even in private servers, travel with TLS between your device and Discord's servers, where the company can still read every word you type.

Discord text is secure against outsiders but readable by Discord, which ties that choice to moderation tools that do not work with end-to-end encrypted text. In practice, treat a Discord text channel like an email on a company server. Keep passwords, ID documents and banking details out of it, and move truly private talks to a voice call.

What personal data does Discord collect?

Discord collects account details, device data, usage data and the content you post, according to the privacy policy at discord.com/privacy. Signing up asks for a username, a password, a birthday and a way to contact you, such as an email address or a phone number. Discord may also ask for a verified phone number later.

Discord is secure with your data in one sense: the Privacy Hub at discord.com/safety-privacy says it does not sell personal information. Proton notes that Discord began personalized ads in 2024 using activity data, though sponsored content can be switched off. Breaches are the other side of the record.

Can governments see Discord messages?

Governments cannot see Discord voice or video calls in transit, because those are end-to-end encrypted. Text is different. Discord keeps readable copies of text messages, and its Transparency Hub at discord.com/safety-transparency reports how it responds to user data requests.

Discord is also not breach-proof. Proton reports that no single breach has exposed the whole user database. The most recent one leaked over 70,000 government ID images used for age verification. Discord.io, an outside invite service, suffered its own breach in August 2023.

Is Discord safe for kids and teens?

Discord is secure enough for teens only with its safety protections left on. The default minimum age is 13 in most countries, but age checks rely on the birth date a user types in. Teen accounts keep Message Requests on, and the Parent Hub at discord.com/safety explains Family Center, which shows parents friends, servers and contacts without message contents.

Where is Discord least secure?

Discord is least secure in public servers, because anyone can join them, including trolls, scammers and bots. Private servers are safer when every member is someone you trust. Even there, members can screenshot or export what you share. Nothing typed is fully private.

Discord is more secure inside well-run servers. Proton points out that admins get auto-moderation bots, keyword filters, rate limits and a reporting system, so a moderated community catches much of the junk before members see it. Large open servers with few moderators get the least of that protection.

For example, a public server with 10,000 members and 2 active moderators gives scammers far more room than a private server of 15 friends. A Discord server is only as secure as its moderation, and Discord is secure overall only when you pick servers with care.

What goes wrong with Discord safety?

The biggest Discord safety mistake is treating a text channel as private. Discord can read it, members can screenshot it, and breaches happen. Joining invite-reward servers is the second mistake, because the tips at discord.com/safety link them to spam and unsolicited messages.

The third mistake is handing Discord a number you cannot spare. The policy at discord.com/privacy lists a phone number among the contact details Discord may hold, and Discord may ask you to verify one later. A private number (coming soon) used only for Discord keeps your personal number out of that record, while public lines on our free Discord numbers page suit only throwaway tests.

Check a Discord server before you join

  1. Find servers through DiscoveryDiscord recommends Server Discovery for active public communities over random invite links.
  2. Skip reward promisesLeave any server that pays perks for invites or asks you to join four servers for four.
  3. Limit DMs from membersOpen the server's Privacy Settings and choose whether its members may message you.
  4. Look for active moderationPrefer servers whose admins use auto-moderation bots, keyword filters and the reporting tools.
  5. Keep personal details outPost nothing in a text channel you would not want Discord, members or a breach to expose.
