WhatsApp on a shared line: the 6-digit code, bans and the PIN that saves you

WhatsApp ties the account to the number more tightly than most messengers. It works with a temporary number, but the account only stays yours as long as nobody else verifies that number on another phone.

What WhatsApp checks

WhatsApp sends a six-digit code by SMS (format 123-456) or offers a voice call. Each new verification on another device logs the previous one out. On a shared public number, that can happen at any time.

Step by step

  1. Choose an online lineOpen WhatsApp numbers — lines that received WhatsApp codes in the last 7 days are listed first.
  2. Request the SMS codePick SMS, not voice. Voice calls cannot be received on a public inbox.
  3. Copy the code within 10 minutesCodes are shown in full for 10 minutes, then partly masked for everyone’s safety.
  4. Turn on two-step verificationSettings → Account → Two-step verification. It stops someone else re-registering the number into your chats.

Why WhatsApp says the number is banned

  • Someone before you broke WhatsApp’s rules on that line, and the ban sticks to the number, not the person.
  • The number was verified too many times in a short period.
  • The range looks like VoIP to WhatsApp. Try a mobile line from another country.

Keep the account or keep it disposable

For a throwaway account — testing a business profile, joining one group — a public number is fine. For anything you need next month, a private number is the only way to avoid losing the account when someone else uses the same line.

Do not use public numbers for WhatsApp Business accounts you take payments through.

Questions

Can I receive WhatsApp voice verification?
No. Public inboxes only show SMS. Choose “Send SMS” in the app.
How long does a WhatsApp account on a free number last?
Until someone verifies the same number elsewhere. With two-step verification on, they need your PIN to do that.
